📌 Lithium Battery 101: Decode 3 Most Common Terms – SoC, DoD, EOL

If you own solar storage, EV, backup lithium batteries, these 3 acronyms pop up everywhere—let’s simplify them without complex tech jargon!

🔋 SoC = State of Charge

This is your battery’s fuel gauge. It shows the remaining usable battery capacity in percentage.

  • 100% SoC = Fully charged
  • 30% SoC = Only 30% power left on your battery

    Your phone, inverter, battery monitor all display SoC daily.

🔋 DoD = Depth of Discharge

The opposite of SoC: the percentage of total battery capacity you’ve used/drained.

Formula: SoC + DoD = 100%

Example: Battery at 40% SoC → DoD = 60%

Key rule: Lower DoD = longer battery lifespan. Deep full discharge (100% DoD) ages lithium cells much faster. We recommend keeping daily DoD under 70% for maximum cycles.

🔋 EOL = End of Life

Marks when your lithium battery reaches the end of its serviceable lifespan.

Industry standard: Battery hits EOL when its maximum usable capacity drops to 70%-80% of its original factory capacity.

Once EOL is reached, the battery cannot hold enough power for regular use and needs replacement.

💡 Quick Pro Tip to extend your lithium battery life:

Avoid draining below 20% SoC (over 80% DoD) and don’t leave fully charged (100% SoC) unused for weeks. Shallow charge/discharge cycles keep your battery far from EOL!
